So I typed "Battle for Wesnoth" into my yahoo search bar...

Post by Daravel »

And the 3rd link is to download Wesnoth 1.0 :lol2:

http://uk.search.yahoo.com/search?p=bat ... 8&fr=b1ie7

Just gave me a small laugh, but also brings to mind a question:

Can you still access all the older versions of the game? Is someone keeping a copy of each?
Also, can you access the addon servers for any of them?

Lastly, does anyone keep a track of all the UMC content and keep a copy of it? Specifically art and campaigns. I always wondered how many intuitive pieces of code/scenarios or wonderful artwork gets lost, and could be used by other people who are searching for that exact thing.

Or, is the community pretty good at identifying the good stuff and keeping it in circulation?
I was thinking of maybe making a respository of all UMC scenarios/campaigns and artwork so that new authors can browse through all available terrains/units etc.

Older versions are all available on SVN, if you know how to compile them. DOn't know about UMC though - I think the older servers are still around. The community's pretty good at keeping things up to date and working though - decent ones, anyway.

Versions 0.7.11 and up are available at SourceForge.
Older versions can be found on this forum and via Internet Archive (1, 2).
Version 0.1 is available as source code (via), Windows binary (via) and Mac binary (via).
See also shadowmaster's blogs about Wesnoth's evolution and the interview with Dave.
Finally, there are the screenshots, including older and ancient impressions.

just played 0.1 and lol'd :lol2:
1.0 is surprisingly similar to 1.4 (first version I played) and it looks nothing like 0.1!
Oh, I'm sorry, did I break your concentration?

I actually have 1.4 and 1.0 on my computer, I use them to steal sprites and for .cfg's from old UMCs.

IMO, 1.0 looks really different from 1.4, 1.0 has really old sprites for every single faction, except Drakes, who have had the same sprites until 1.7(excluding the saurians, who were updated in 1.2). Plus the sound effects/animations aren't as good.

Huluvuta's comment is what I was thinking about.

Would it be useful to have a database, with a forum thread providing links, of all UMC portraits, sprites, terrains, items, scenario's and campaigns?

Am I offering to go into the add on servers for 1.0 and onwards, download everything and "strip them for parts"? Yes, I am. But only if I would actually be digging up useful content that people would actually use.

The amount of times that I've seen someone say "Oh, I made a Drake campaign" and someone says "What about different Drakes units" and they say "But I'm no artist" and then someone else says "Ok, but what about these from campaign X?". How many lost goodies are there around? Besides, wouldn't it be useful to have a UMC content database for everyone?

Disclaimer: I'm willing to do a fair bit of leg work here, but I know nothing about setting up a database and such; so I'd need some help.

Just for fun, try to access some of these:
http://forum.wesnoth.org/download/file.php?id=xxxxx
Where max. xxxxx is currently about 43600.

If you'd really want to collect all portraits/sprites/terrains/items, that would be a lot of work and you'd need lots of space. And just for 1.6 and 1.8, there are at least 630 scenarios/campaigns on the add-on servers.

I see you got my PM; let's discuss your plan on IRC a bit.

If it helps here you have the links to some downloads from 0.4.x to 0.8 I guess, it is from an old website:

For the sprites of the 1.1 or 1.0 (don't recall exactly) here's another link ;):

If you're gonna regroup all UMc content and stuff, I guess you could also browse the graphics library a bit: http://wiki.wesnoth.org/GraphicLibrary

Actually, only the 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 stable servers are up. (There are two additional servers for SVN trunk and 1.9 that aren't really used atm.)

The content of the older servers may or may not be available in older backups kept by past and current project maintainers and system admins, or even in some obscure non-reachable location in our current server, who knows.

Ok, so I'm doing this. With the invaluable help of Norbert.

I need to know if such an idea would be useful and used?

Essentially you will get this:
- All music from 1.2 onwards
- All sounds from 1.2 onwards
- All unit sprites
- All unit animations
- All portraits
- All story images
- All terrains

All in one webspace for you to browse and download from.

Well, I guess I would at least take a look at it - wether I'd use and download stuff would dpend on the ratio between my need for it and the quality of the material.

Do you plan on including stuff that might repeat itself/is already on the 1.8 add-on server? (like, units from Archaic Era, for exemple, that probably exist both on 1.6 and 1.8. Maybe even on 1.4 for all I know)

I intend to go right the way to 1.8. Of course, there will be some overlap, but it's working so that the same file names become copies and can be ignored - preventing a double upload.

I will also be doing 1.4 - 1.8 in a big chunk, so I don't repeat myself over different versions.

You may want to include also stuff from 1.0. For example, 1.0 included some music tracks that were removed in 1.2. Some UMC developer may find them useful. :)

Currently Norbert informs me that between 1.2 -1.8 there are 43,000 files!

However, if you're sure the files on there could be useful then I could ask Norbert to only pull the wav/ogg files off - Otherwise this project will take years.
