Rendering can sometimes decrease speed, though sometime it might actually speed things up. Wesnoth currently runs well on some older equipment. It woud be nice to keep it that way. That doesn't preclude rendered effects, just requires care.

Ok, this should be the same size as a light mages "aura". It could be used as an alpha map for that aura. Might look neat =) Image could always be improved upon.
