Hi. I'm one of the authors of autopackage, a new installation system for Linux. t aims to make software installation in Linux easy and distribution-neutral. I was looking for a cool app to package (for further testing autopackage) and I came across Wesnoth.
Static binaries are huge and waste a lot of memory and disk space/bandwidth. Maybe autopackage would be the solution to your problem. It *is* possible to create binaries that work on many/most Linux distros.
In invite you to come over to #autopackage at irc.freenode.net if you have questions or want to discuss things.
