Was it a 1.6 add-on?
In fact better yet, what add-on in particular are you trying to get? Just give us one example.

I found this earlier in the thread, and am afraid you might still be under the same misconception because you've not posted anything to the contrary.

http://addons.wesnoth.org/1.6/
You have to extract it yourself if you download from that website as far as I know. I know for sure Wesnoth doesn't automatically extract .zip'ed add-ons, so I'm pretty sure it doesn't do it for .gz'ed ones either.

If you want things to be more automated, perhaps you should figure out why your computer cannot connect to the add-ons server from in game.
And do not insult our brains. We are trying to help.

That's right. Wesnoth cannot uncompress existing add-on archives in the filesystem directly. The most it can do is uncompress add-ons received directly via the add-ons client, and read compressed saved games and the save index file.

that's what I want to do, but it don't works. Wesnoth can uncompress it from the add on client. But I can't reach http://addons.wesnoth.org/1.6/ over wesnoth. Is this anyhow possible?

Have you tried typing " add-ons.wesnoth.org:15003 " in the add-on thingie? (No quotes.)

EDIT: Oh, I guess so...

The website url does not work inside wesnoth.

1. Go there in a web browser
2. Download the add-on you want
3. extract the addon
4. Copy the add-on into your add-ons folder
5. Enjoy

OR

1. Load up the game
2. Click the add-ons button
3. Make sure the box says "addons.wesnoth.org"
4. Click connect.
5. Choose your add-on
6. Click okay
7. Enjoy

The only folder in http://addons.wesnoth.org that have 4 addons is trunk. Did you compile a svn version of wesnoth ?
There's a way to download the addons for other versions by adding a port number to "addons.wesnoth.org" in the addons message box, but I don't know the numbers.

norbert, in another thread wrote:
zaladore wrote:how do you change the port number
The format of the string after "Server:" is <server>[:port].
For example: add-ons.wesnoth.org:15001
That will make the client connect to add-ons.wesnoth.org, at port 15001.

[Edit: And 15001 = 1.8, 15003 = 1.6, and 15005 = 1.4.]
I just experimented a bit, and can confirm what norbert said. So, the port numbers now are:
  • 1.8 = 15001
  • 1.6 = 15003
  • 1.4 = 15005
  • 1.9 = 15002
  • trunk = 15004
There is no warranty that an add-on from one version will work correctly, or at all, on another Wesnoth version.
Current maintainer of these add-ons, all on 1.16:
The Sojournings of Grog, Children of Dragons, A Rough Life, Wesnoth Lua Pack, The White Troll (co-author)
