I am new to the game and new to the forum but i already have one suggestion:
What about a private message for new members to the forum?
A message where you are greated and maybe some important links are included.

These kind of messages are not required but I always find it a warm welcome.

What do you guys think?

It's not functionality that phpbb has by default, so there'd need to be an extension which does that.
