Elvish Lord Attack Frame

Post by Sangel »

Just doing a little more mucking about. I noticed that the Elvish Lord lacks animations, so I've alpha mapped the static figure and created a ranged attack poise. What do you think?

Nifty, but I think his back arm should be moved up a pixel or so.

We also need another frame for his arm moved forward in the hurling motion, right?

Also, I've been thinking, perhaps the Elvish Lord should use iceballs instead of fire. No other Elves in the game use fire attacks, and it seems somewhat too destructive a force for Wesnothian Elves to use. Further, he is from the cold cold north lands.

Any opinions?

OK, here's the two-frame sequence.

Personally, I'm fine with Elves hurling fireballs. Their battle magic is meant to be pretty potent, after all.

I was unaware that Kalenz was a Northern Elf. Shouldn't he be dressed in their blue tones if he is? Perhaps we need to have two versions of the Elf Lord: The Elf Lord of the Forest (green) who hurls fireballs, and the Elf Lord of the North (blue), who hurls ice bolts. Kalenz could be changed to be the latter.

The melee attack is proving problematic. Here's what I have so far.

The problem is that when you swing a sword you step in to the swing... and the default Elvish Lord already looks like he's stepping in.

Exactly. I've accentuated his "forward step" a little bit for the attack frame, but it's not that pronounced. Perhaps if he's jabbing... but then, how to show that?

Since he's already stepping forward, perhaps he do something a bit wacky as a ranged attack. Like step back and rase the sword over his head to strike. If we allow 2 frames for melee attacks, as we seem to be doing for ranged, you could then have him stab with his right foot forward instead of his left.

That's it! Well, not exactly. You can show a jab very easily in two frames. And here I was wondering how to do the motion blur...

Glad I could help. You've been doing some really good artwork recently, especially with the new elvish Gladerider. (great name BTW!)

OK, here's the Elvish Lord stabbing someone with a sword.

And thanks, Quartex. Thankfully, Wesnoth has a huge base of graphics to base off / learn from / scavenge from, and the feedback in the forums has been really helpful as well.
