Of rabbits and men

Post by cedric »

Now folks, beware the most dreaded creature of Wesnoth! Yeah, you named it: the rabbit. ;)

Code: Select all

[unit]
name=Rabbit
image=rabbit.png
image_defensive=rabbit-defend.png
hitpoints=14
movement_type=woodland
movement=4
experience=500
level=1
alignment=neutral
advanceto=null
cost=6
usage=null
unit_description="The rabbit is a cute creature living in the fields and forests. In its gnawing attack, striking from powerful incisors, resides the Wesnoth carrots' greatest fear. Alas, rabbits are victims of the appetite of many other nasty creatures like wolves or even humans, for their flesh is amongst the most delicious known dishes."
get_hit_sound=groan.wav
        [attack]
        name=incisors
        type=blade
        range=short
        damage=1
        number=1
                [frame]
                begin=-200
                end=100

                [/frame]
        [/attack]
[/unit]

Was your worse nightmare hordes of rabbits sweeping through the lands of Wesnoth? Well, don't worry too much, then. This rabbit is not intended to be another military unit, but rather a special character for a side scenario.

The basic idea is as follows...
At the corner of a wood, the player stumbles across a sad, speaking rabbit, who desperately seeks for help: the only person able to give him human shape back is an old mage living cloistered in a place infested with bunny-eating beasts. Such a long journey for a so weak creature!
Thus at the end of the map, you will be offered to help the little speaking creature. If you accept, you'll have to lead the rabbit and escort it through the dangers to the mage, avoiding its death at all costs. If you're successful, the grateful once-a-rabbit character might help you later in your campaign.

Shall I continue on this path? Comments about the images and story welcome. :)

You can find all the pictures, animations and cfg files here: http://cedricduval.free.fr/wesnoth/rabbit/
Thanks to fmunoz for giving me precious advice for this first attempt at drawing Wesnoth sprites. :)

I like the idea of the storyline, but I find the rabbit a little too cute and cuddly for Wesnoth ;) A bear wit fit better, IMO. But I'm not opposed to the rabbit if others like it.

ImageMy first version looked more natural and hence less cuddly, but it didn't fit Wesnoth well I think, so the new one is more cartoonish.

Well, the idea is to have a litte defenceless creature. It can hardly attack, will die at the first bite, can't run very far, and so on. That's why our heroes are needed to escort him in this merciless world.

A bear would surely sound a lot less weak and defenceless. ;)

Less realist than cedric's 1st image, less cartoony than 2nd one.

Make him maybe a darker color... and a bit evil... :twisted:

Oh, um! My mistake, i didn't read the story line... Maybe there could be an evil rabbit? Like from an opposite clan? :roll: :wink: :D

Evil? :shock: Well, I imagined him more sad and scared than evil, at least for the intended scenario. But of course, if someone wants to reuse a rabbit unit for something totally different, no problem, I can try to provide the picture! Just different moods for different stories... :)

Please let me know what you think about the storyline (from the first comments, I have the impression that you would use this stuff differently than I thought), and which is your prefered look.

Anyway, here's a first stab at the imploring rabbit for the dialog scenes with the heroes:

EDIT: Updated the above sketch. Now I have to put some color...
EDIT: Done with coloring: see post below.

Oh, yes: burrows war! We'll need new tiles for scenarios inside the rabbit holes. ;)

fmunoz's rabbit is more realistic but given the humorous plotline I like cedric's more. I think it's the expression on his face, I like the idea of a overthe top cartoony character for a goofier plotline. Either way it sounds like it would be really funny. Maybe the rabbit should be in an optional easter egg (no pun intended) quest in the main campaign.

An easter egg? Why not. Something like hiding a small rabbit hole on the map, and triggering the action only if a character discovers it?

Here's the sad imploring rabbit for the dialog sequences, for you to comment on.

(almost finalized now, just lacks a good grass)

cedric: Your rabbit is very tame, not really frightful.

Did you see Donnie Darko?:

I imagine the rabbit of the nightmares more like in Donnie Darko as your ducky rabbit.

This one is not mean. There will maybe be one that WILL be. It was said in the comments above. This one is a nice cute one. Harmless :oops:

P.S. By the way, if people here did not see Donnie Darko i highly recommend it! Its an amazing movie. It actually has a pretty original storyline... 8)

Arrrrgh!!! :shock:

Ok, guys, finally you won. You've summoned it, now here's the rabbit of your worst nightmares:

:twisted:

But as I already said, this does not fit the storyline.
