Of rabbits and men
Now folks, beware the most dreaded creature of Wesnoth! Yeah, you named it: the rabbit.
Was your worse nightmare hordes of rabbits sweeping through the lands of Wesnoth? Well, don't worry too much, then. This rabbit is not intended to be another military unit, but rather a special character for a side scenario.
The basic idea is as follows...
At the corner of a wood, the player stumbles across a sad, speaking rabbit, who desperately seeks for help: the only person able to give him human shape back is an old mage living cloistered in a place infested with bunny-eating beasts. Such a long journey for a so weak creature!
Thus at the end of the map, you will be offered to help the little speaking creature. If you accept, you'll have to lead the rabbit and escort it through the dangers to the mage, avoiding its death at all costs. If you're successful, the grateful once-a-rabbit character might help you later in your campaign.
Shall I continue on this path? Comments about the images and story welcome.

Thanks to fmunoz for giving me precious advice for this first attempt at drawing Wesnoth sprites.

My first version looked more natural and hence less cuddly, but it didn't fit Wesnoth well I think, so the new one is more cartoonish.telex4 wrote:I like the idea of the storyline, but I find the rabbit a little too cute and cuddly for Wesnoth
Well, the idea is to have a litte defenceless creature. It can hardly attack, will die at the first bite, can't run very far, and so on. That's why our heroes are needed to escort him in this merciless world.telex4 wrote:A bear wit fit better, IMO. But I'm not opposed to the rabbit if others like it.
A bear would surely sound a lot less weak and defenceless.

Evil? Well, I imagined him more sad and scared than evil, at least for the intended scenario. But of course, if someone wants to reuse a rabbit unit for something totally different, no problem, I can try to provide the picture! Just different moods for different stories...Aleksi wrote:Make him maybe a darker color... and a bit evil...
Please let me know what you think about the storyline (from the first comments, I have the impression that you would use this stuff differently than I thought), and which is your prefered look.
Anyway, here's a first stab at the imploring rabbit for the dialog scenes with the heroes:
EDIT: Updated the above sketch. Now I have to put some color...
EDIT: Done with coloring: see post below.

fmunoz's rabbit is more realistic but given the humorous plotline I like cedric's more. I think it's the expression on his face, I like the idea of a overthe top cartoony character for a goofier plotline. Either way it sounds like it would be really funny. Maybe the rabbit should be in an optional easter egg (no pun intended) quest in the main campaign.
An easter egg? Why not. Something like hiding a small rabbit hole on the map, and triggering the action only if a character discovers it?quartex wrote:fmunoz's rabbit is more realistic but given the humorous plotline I like cedric's more. Here's the sad imploring rabbit for the dialog sequences, for you to comment on.
(almost finalized now, just lacks a good grass)

This one is not mean. There will maybe be one that WILL be. It was said in the comments above. This one is a nice cute one. Harmless
P.S. By the way, if people here did not see Donnie Darko i highly recommend it! Its an amazing movie. It actually has a pretty original storyline...

Arrrrgh!!!Khiraly wrote:cedric: Your rabbit is very tame, not really frightful.
Did you see Donnie Darko?:
I imagine the rabbit of the nightmares more like in Donnie Darko as your ducky rabbit.
Ok, guys, finally you won. You've summoned it, now here's the rabbit of your worst nightmares:
But as I already said, this does not fit the storyline.
