Voiceover for An Orcish Incursion Development thread
An Orcish Incursion is a short mainline campaign which details the story of one of the first encounters between Elves and Orcs on the Great Continent. This is a working thread for active development of voiceover of the narration and dialog for AOI. The team can begin choosing characters to voice. If you read this and wish to join the team please inform us.
The github repository for this project is here. The repository manager is The_Gnat.
On uploading sound files
There are two ways to upload sound files:
1. Make a post in this thread with the files attached
2. Upload to the github repository
2a. via the browser
2b. via the github app or client
To upload to github you need to create a github account. Then you need to ask The_Gnat to make you a contributor. You can then start uploading to the repository.
Filename convention
I would like to recommend the following filename convention:
<character speaking>_<Scenario number>_<track number>.ogg
So for example the line "Yes, my lord!" by Lomarfel in Scenario 1 will be "Lomarfel_1_3.ogg"
The track number is 3 because it's the third time he speaks in scenario 1.
For lines that are based on If conditions:
<character speaking>_<Scenario number>_<conditional branch>_<tracknumber>.ogg
example: Advisor_1_ifnoshamans_1.ogg
On refining sound files
The sound editor that I, max_torch, am using is Audacity. It can be downloaded and installed for free.
Steps to refine the sound files:
1. Record your lines in Audacity. Project your voice towards the microphone. Take the recording in a room that is not prone to a lot of reverberation; for example it might not be a good idea to record in a small bathroom that has smooth tiles. Provide a period of about two seconds where you are not speaking so that there is a sample of the background noise. You might want to have a backup of the original sound files before you start modifying them.
2. Use Audacity's "noise reduction" feature. It will make you select the part of the recording where you are not speaking to represent the background noise and after it's done analyzing select the entire recording as the target for noise removal/reduction.
3. There are certain sounds we make such as lip smacks, clicks, exaggerated hiss, and other aural artifacts that should be removed/reduced. Sometimes you can see these things visually in the sound waveform. Try to review the recordings and fix these.
4. The above mentioned are just a few basics. Expert sound persons could obviously do much more to enhance this. I just learned how to do this recently because of these voiceover projects. But right now these are basic limits of my knowledge. If you are done editing and are satisfied with your sound files you can now export the sounds as .ogg and follow the filename convention.
5. Once there are sufficient number of sound files available in the repository the volume levels (dB) can be adjusted for uniformity.

Awesome max_torch great work! Would you like me to set up a github project?

Re: Voiceover for An Orcish Incursion Development thread
Okay I will do. I will implement it the same as the AToTB and we can always port it if the mainline code josteph discussed is implemented.

One of the key things is at least we will be ready to put all the sound files in one place. When the repository is up I will edit the first post of this thread to include the repository link and add instructions on how to upload sound files.
Re: Voiceover for An Orcish Incursion Development thread
I did discuss some ideas, but if you want to see them implemented someone needs to take them forward. At least it needs a thread on the ideas forum about the engine change, or a github issue, so the idea isn't forgotten in the depths of the DiD thread. If the other devs are happy with the general idea, it shouldn't be too hard to implement.
I'd be happy to help from the wesnoth core side of things, but it'll be best if one of you guys drives this, since you can describe the use-case. It's hard to design a feature without such input.

Here is the link to the github project, if anyone wants to be added as a contributor they can PM me!
Okay thank you josteph I will do that. Here.
EDIT: Also it would be great if people could say what roles they would be interested in speaking!

Thanks a lot! The instructions are very helpful!
Also which role('s) would you want to do in the campaign?
